Afternon: Secrets of Cologne Tour
For more than 2,000 years we Cologne natives have been living, loving, suffering and celebrating on the Rhine. Roman soldiers, French occupying forces, merchants and priests have given the city its distinctive face. In two hours, we would like to tell you a few things from the moving history and the present of Cologne. You will hear why it took more than 600 years to complete the cathedral, why an archbishop turned a blind eye in stealing, why a mayor fought a lion and why the women of Cologne never used to have to work. You will discover where Cologne smells like an Italian field of flowers, why the fishwives gossiped so much, and why Bill Clinton particularly liked Cologne. And you will ultimately also hear who the “Dicke Pitter” and “Kallendresser” are and what a “Köbes” does. You will see: it’s really not so hard to be a Colognian! 1P: Return to the hotel.

What’s Cologne without its cathedral? Completed in 1880 after more than 630 years of construction, it is one of the more prominent structures of the Western World. Throughout the centuries and to date it marks the city’s scenery and history. Any tour of Cologne would be incomplete without the cathedral. The gothic cathedral can be seen from various angles. In addition to a general guided tour on its history of origins, specific topics such as glass, paintings, building history, and the cathedral’s treasure continue to amaze visitors. Duration: 1 hour.

This is a must do visit in Cologne. NS Dokumentationszentrum – Gestapo Prison is an old Nazi prison which is preserved in its original state. This site has a terrifying reminder of the Holocaust horrors. It is a really old jail and a Nazi Documentation center too. The inscriptions left on the walls of the cells are the voices from the past brought hauntingly back to life. The permanent exhibition on the upper floors is accessible to non German speakers via an audio guide.
